The Panama Canal

Entering the first lock at night

At anchor in Lake Gatun. It is a man made lake 85 feet above sea level. All the locks use the water from this lake and fed only by gravity. The lake is kept full by several rivers. This area gets over 100 inches of rain annually. We spent the night here so we could conitune through the rest of the canal during the day.

Native Panamians dancing at the Lake Gatun Yacht Club

It is absolutely amazing that the canal was finished in 1914 and the steel gates are original. The Canal is considered the 8th wonder of the world. The fact that it could be built with primitive machinery is beyond my comprehension!

View from the plane - the ruins cover 6 square miles

The great Mayan Pyramid. It is exactly aligned to the points of the compass.

The ball court. The vertical rings on either side are 50 feet above the ground. The object was to get the ball through the ring only using elbows, knees and hips. The winning team was sarificed (it was deemed a geart honor to be sacrificed and ensured a greta after life). I am a born loser!

A close up of the rings

A carving - notice the person appears to be wearing a helmut. Did the Mayans have help from aliens from another world??

Another ruin from the site.
